Ashtanga is the original flow practice from India -- all the Power Yoga and Vinyasa Flow variants use Ashtanga as their source. The technique of vinyasa (linking the poses together in a flowing sequence of movements timed to the breath), originates with K. Pattabhi Jois’s Ashtanga Vinyasa Series.
The emphasis in Ashtangavinyasa, is on movement coordinated with the breath (vinyasa), specific visual or mental focus (drishti) and the use of energetic locks (bandha) to build internal heat, awaken core energies and move toward a natural state of meditation. By working on a specific series of poses, practitioners can internalize the practice and make it more meditative over time. Each class starts with the two styles of Ashtanga sun salutations, a series of standing poses, the primary series, then finishes with the closing series. In total there are 27 postures within the primary series however students can expect to perform approximately 67 asanas throughout the 1.5 hour class after incorporating the vinyasas. This class is appropriate for active beginners to advanced practitioners. Modifications will always be provided to students.
Traditional Hatha yoga is the classical form of yoga postures and breathing techniques that revitalizes the body mind and spirit. It is a practice that tones muscles, improves concentration, flexibility, detoxifies organs and allows you to experience a state of deep relaxation. The level of the class will be a reflection of the students abilities.
This class is appropriate for all levels. The teacher will always offer variations and modifications of the poses so students can perform all asanas safely.
Hatha flow is an extension of the traditional Hatha yoga classes yet there is more fluidity in the sequencing of postures. Students can expect a slightly faster paced class as they will practice an increased number of postures. Hatha flow can be described as a moving meditation. This class is a beautiful practice which encourages the cultivation of focus, determination, strength, detoxification, while evoking complete relaxation. This class is appropriate for active beginners through advanced students. Modifications and variations will be offered for more challenging postures.
"Prana" is Breath or vital energy within the body. On subtle levels prana represents the pranic energy responsible for life or life force, and "ayama" means control. So Pranayama is "Control of Breath". When someone learns to control the rhythms of pranic energy with pranayama they can achieve healthy body and peaceful mind. In these classes students will be introduced to and will practice a variety of breathing techniques some of which include Anuloma - Viloma (Alternate nostril breathing), SuryanBhedan Pranayama (Right Nostril Breathing), kapalabhati, bhastrika, Ujjayi, Bhramari, Shitali and Sitkari.
